What are your Resolutions for 2010?
icon1 lisbonblogger | icon2 Lisbon | icon4 12 24th, 2009| icon3No Comments »

The year is nearly over. Let’s not get sentimental, but at the end of December just about everyone has some melancholic feelings and thinks about the year that has just passed by. In this way, negative and positive events, circumstances and occurrences of our personal life, but as well in regard to the entire world, will flood through our minds. And of course, a kind of bad conscience will also be produced, because some of the excess kilos which for almost one year we swore to loose are still on our hips. Curiously, there is also a cigarette packet in your jacket pocket, although you promised to give up smoking last year. It’s time to think about new resolutions for the New Year, but please, be more realistic this time!

new-years-resolutions

On New Year’s Eve we will get bombed with those metaphorical speeches, where they talk about new dreams, new desires, new hopes, new promises, a new year…. sounds like a kind of clearance sale: Old things out, new ones in!. But has the turn of the year always to be so symbolic? After all, you can make your plans, new goals or change things during the year, or do we have to wait until the 31st of December? However, perhaps New Year’s Eve enjoys a kind of official character, because we make a kind of an oath for obligating ourselves to fulfil it.

“Our good intentions are usually the first disappointments of the new year”. We couldn’t define it a better way. Talking about the typical resolutions for the New Year, it’s not necessary to spend a lot of time thinking: less chocolate, no cigarettes, less alcohol, loose weight, get up earlier, more fruits… As you can see it’s only about consuming or doing something “more” or “less”. But why aren’t we a little bit more creative with our intentions? What about “more passionate sex”, or “working less, and enjoying life more”, or perhaps “eating as well on our own as well as accompanied“ not always walking with such a stressful face and smiling a bit more”? Those intentions sound more realistic, don’t they? However, each person should decide whether they want to make real resolutions for the whole of the coming year or if each morning they want to wake up thinking about some a few goals they want to achieve each day.

And what does the turn of the year also mean? That’s easy. We switch on the TV, open the newspapers or we can already hear it on the radio: the best of 2009 mania. Whether the best music, the best film, the best mishap, the best book, the best sports person…not matter what, the media kills us with the many “best of categories” of 2009. It’s very easy to think of some keywords for 2009: Barack Obama, swine flu, Michael Jackson and many others. But why don´t you do your personal “Best of 2009” show. Undoubtedly it will me more fun and entertaining.

Intentions, promises or not, what you should really plan and fulfil is to travel more. What about making a trip to one of the most enchanting Mediterranean capitals of Europe? Rent the cheap and comfortable Lisbon apartments and try the mouth watering cuisine and visit some of their most famous landmarks such as the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. Surely this is a worthwhile New year’s resolution!

It’s time to turn your brain on to choose Christmas gifts! You don’t know whether to give something functional, beautiful, classic, funny or original. Don’t worry; here are some clues for some cool ideas to make your shopping a pleasure instead of a nightmare. And if you’re too lazy to fight it out with the myriads of hungry Christmas shoppers, you can stay at home and buy everything online. With a dose of imagination, patience and love, your friends and family will love your surprises.

gifts

Some people have the gift of giving incredible and original presents: “What a great idea! You know me so well! You always guess what I need!” And there are others who always fail with their gift ideas! It is not so easy to choose a good gift! Here are some very original ideas that do not require being a millionaire, just a bit creative…so take notes!

How about a relaxing massage gift, a  bottle of champagne, a Spaghetti gauge or a Bonsai? Stranger gifts are the anti-seasickness wristband, the key locator, the skin analyzer or a traffic light to avoid crashing every time you park in your garage.

For the travellers, a universal adapter is a great idea. For wine lovers, the open magnetic bottles will be very helpful. It is also possible to name a star or give a cup that changes its colour when you drink tea or coffee. A special meal, a CD, a pillow or a shirt with a printed photo are also some good ideas. There are even special gifts for each zodiac sign.

If you can avoid the classics such as perfume, books or socks, even better! But there are no rules, so if you can find the perfect gift, even a classic one can be a success. The secret lies in knowing how to choose something according to the person we have in mind.

If you don’t have enough money to give something to all your family, but you are a creative person, you can prepare or make something yourself, with your hands and your imagination. During your family holidays, you can take some pictures and send them a small album. They will surely love it.

For lovers, a bag full of kisses and hugs will be enough! Maybe the perfect gift is something you can both take advantage of such as erotic underware, a massage or a trip. What counts is our good intention!

Spending a few days in a European capital is original and unforgettable. Lisbon is a very romantic destination, surrounded by nature. For an incredible Christmas, have an incredible stay in the best apartments in Lisbon, the last days of 2009 will be just perfect.

Help, I’ve just been Googled!
icon1 lisbonblogger | icon2 Lisbon | icon4 12 2nd, 2009| icon33 Comments »

Nowadays our linguistic landscape is getting more and more marked by the most modern words and terms. Not only words like “the international financial crisis” are fashionable, but as well the most bizarre ones which even our grandmother uses in her daily speech. The former “I’ll call you later” has been transformed into a “Hey, let’s skype this afternoon, ok?”. Meanwhile the so called hot buttons are flooding our television programme with game shows presented by scantily-clad beautiful women or hyperactive men. Nowadays, we spend all day long downloading programmes, or making backups of our computer systems. And don’t get frightened when you see a hysterical person screaming “Oh my god, they’ve Googled me”. Welcome to the 21st century!

googled

The Google imperium isn’t just the most used searching engine within the cyber world, but it also gives us very useful information about different cultures and behaviours of the many countries spread out through the whole planet. Yet for a long time Google offers a special function for investigating the most searched words, divided into different categories, countries, regions and time periods. Therefore, marketing experts and trend analysts can enjoy a new successful instrument for adapting their strategies to the actual society.

But those results can also be very interesting and entertaining for us normal people out there in cyberspace. Hence we can see that “sex” is the most searched word worldwide. Well, that’s not very unusual, but what is curious is that in super Islamic countries like Pakistan (first place on the ranking), Bangladesh (3rd), Egypt (8th) or Sudan (9th) they are searching most for this word. So it seems to be that despite their religious restrictions, everyone is just dying to get jiggy with it! Other curious questions are why the German chancellor “Angela Merkel” is being most searched in the autonomous regions of Palestine, or why most of the fans of “Angelina Jolie” apparently live in Georgia, Albania and Macedonia. The year is almost over and so Google will soon publish the list of the most searched words of 2009. Come on, undoubtedly you already have an idea of some possible terms on the list, right? Michael Jackson, financial crisis, Obama, swine flu…and, of course, sex!

Google is so in fashion, that we use it as an appropriate verb ‘to google’. Even a Swedish child was given the name “Kai Google”. The first “google kid” is already 4 years old, but we still don’t know if it has a younger brother called Ebay or a little sister with the name Youtube. Well, that would be too exaggerated and the parents would have serious legal problems for giving their children such strange names.

Whether they are the newest internet technologies or not: to be honest, we all could live very happily without the World Wide Web. What about a trip to the impressive Portuguese capital which offers you an incredible culture and an enchanting atmosphere? Rent the best apartments in Lisbon and enjoy cheap and comfortable accommodation.

Although they always say that we are lack any sense of creativity, inspiration and imagination especially in times of the financial crisis, we can only deny those assertions regarding the imaginativeness of one of the world’s most beautiful things: sex. A lot of couples or passionate singles, searching for an adventure, think of original places for a “quickie” during the day. Those who only use their bed for spending erotic moments are completely out of fashion. Like all phenomena of the erotic world, sex in public places has proper terminations: Dogging and Outdoor-Sex.

dogging

Whether at the beach, above the clouds on a plane, in the forest, car, elevator, changing rooms or in the middle of the street… there are no limits when it comes to the selection of a place for having sex. But you should also consider the risks of sex in public places. Numerous bruises have been had in the plane’s small toilet, serious traffic accidents because of some hot moments during a trip, slipping while having a bath or shower, sand at the beach which can be very painful in some certain parts of our body, insect stings in the forest, cystitis due to the cold floor, grazes on your knees and elbows caused by the apparently plush looking carpet, the list is endless! However, we can accept little painful occurrences because erotic moments are quite the most beautiful ones in our life.

Outdoor-Sex and Dogging can give the decisive kick to your boring relationship. The creeping boredom of your daily routine can disappear within seconds with some new creative ideas. While outdoor-sex is about spontaneous sex at extraordinary places outside of the own four walls, dogging is considered a subcategory of exhibitionism where people meet at public places for having sex with each other and in front of an audience. The most popular “dogging places” are forests or parking lots. In any case, you never shouldn’t loose respect towards society and pay attention to the fact that kids for example might become compulsory witnesses to your wild fantasies. Rubbish like used condoms should be disposed of appropriately. Even the world’s most beautiful thing involves a certain responsibility.

Whether new sex toys, sex positions, places or new kinds of spontaneity, there are many ideas for improving your sexual life. Even the stars know how to apply their creativity. Remember Paris Hilton who was caught having sex on the luxury yacht of Sir Elton John and was thrown out of his party as a result!

And what else is good for a relationship? Some relaxed and passionate vacations of course! Discover the enchanting city of the Fados and the delicious Portuguese gastronomy. Rent the best apartments in Lisbon and enjoy a comfortable and economic accommodation for those very special moments.

icon1 lisbonblogger | icon2 Lisbon | icon4 11 23rd, 2009| icon3No Comments »

Those who still prefer traditional weddings are outmoded. Romantic weddings with white dresses, carriage and doves are part of the recent past. Nowadays are in fashion cool creative ideas as marry riding an elephant in Sri Lanka or making bungee jumping in Australia. Why to get married in the boring town halls or churches? Do you have aroused you curiosity? Do you want to know some original ideas? Here are some examples of the scariest weddings of the century.

The cinematographic world has some influence in our private lives. Some people like the cinema so much that they imitate their favorite main characters in their own weddings. The brides dress with Superman, Batman, Spiderman or Catwoman costumes. These are just some of the craziest wedding of the world. But not only the couple dress with costumes, but also all the guests. A USA couple imitated the Sherk and Fiona wedding, and their guests disguised themselves as ogres and other imaginary figures. Another couple dressed like they were in the Star Wars movie… Let your imagination run wild! What is your favorite movie?

Couples are also very creative when choosing a place to get marry The churches and town halls are outdated and people look more original places. What about a wedding with gravity absence? Don’t worry, you don’t have to negotiate with NASA, since there are different airlines that organize weightlessness flight for 20 seconds. If you have a strong stomach … And what about a wedding over the clouds? In this case, the grooms were fixed on the roofs of two different aircrafts and formalized their union at dizzying heights. They simply had to shout “yes” to the reverend, who was in a third plane, and he formalized the marriage.

Compared with these examples, Las Vegas looks much more boring, but, why not? It is an original way to get married too! If you have not enough with these ideas, what about a gothic wedding? Or maybe you preffer a fetish wedding or a wedding driving a beatiful Harely Davidson?

Do you want to have the most romantic honeymoon? Then come to the Old Continent and visit the Portugese capital. Rent Apartments in Lisbon to find the best accommodation.

The capital of Portugal is considered the second most important economic centre in the Iberian Peninsula. Besides that, the city offers a rich mixture of traditional Portuguese and modern sights, as well as dozens of museums, little restaurants and of course: Port wine and Fado Music!

Famous landmarks in Lisbon include the Cristo Rei monument (inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and the tower of Belém (classified as a Unesco world heritage site). This last one is located in the district of Belém, which is famous for its pastel de nata (a cream filled pastry). Be sure to try one while you’re there!

Not to miss is the Sâo Jorge castle, a medieval castle situated on the highest hill in the historic centre. Inside you can watch a multimedia show about Lisbon’s history, and the tower of Ulysses offers a 360-degrees view of the city. To get there, hop on the old fashioned tram number 28.

Some of you might remember that in 1998 the World Expo was held in Lisbon. The site of that expo is now known as the Parque das Nações (park of nations) and a must see is the Oceanário. It’s the largest aquarium in Europe, with more then 16000 marine animals. Other sights are the funicular, the Vasco Da Gama shopping centre and the Lisbon Casino.

A must see museum is the Gulbenkian Foundation, which has a tremendous collection of paintings, manuscripts, sculptures and Armenian art. End your museum day with a stroll through the Jardim da Estrela (star garden).

Music lovers from all over Europe gather at the end of May for the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival that is up for its 4th edition in 2010. Portuguese culture comes alive in July, with the Santos Populares (popular saints), when the whole city is transformed into a colourful world of paper lanterns and lights.

Why not combine dinner with some music and folklore? Café Luso is a Fado restaurant that offers a daily dinner show. And for a glass of good port wine after dinner, Solar do Vinho do Porto is the place. They offer a wide variety of brands, and is a very elegant place.

The place to be after dark is discotheque Lux. Co-owner is Hollywood star John Malkovich, so be prepared for a queue and very strict door policy. There are two floors with an artistic décor, and famous bands often give concerts here. Just one thing, watch out for the giraffe!

Fancy a stay in this wonderful city near the Tagus River? Pamper yourself with a trip to Lisbon, and rent the best apartments in Lisbon to be assured of a comfortable stay.

The Many Beautiful Churches of Lisbon
icon1 lisbonblogger | icon2 Lisbon | icon4 10 20th, 2009| icon31 Comment »

Lisbon has a rich architectural history, which reflects in hundreds of churches throughout the city. From the Romanesque Sé catedral to the baroque Santa Engrácia to the gothic ruins of the Convento do Carmo, you will be amazed at the contrasts to be found here!

The Sé Cathedral was built in 1150 to celebrate the victory over the Moors, and in fact it looks somewhat like a medieval fortress. Inside is a baptismal font where St. Anthony of Padua is said to have been baptised, and above the entrance is a beautiful rose window.

lisbon-churches

Those who want some more brilliance and grandeur better head to the Jerónimos Monastery in the district of Belém. With the structure, king Manuel I wanted to thank the Virgin Mary for Vasco Da Gama’s successful voyage to India. After his death, he was given a tomb in the west portal. The Project was funded by a high tax on spices, and the many treasures brought back from the new worlds.

A little more obscure is the Sao Domingos church, which survived quite some disasters. Although it has undergone some restoration after a fire in the fifties, the scars are still visible. The pillars are scorched, and some say there is still a penetrating smell of ashes.

Seen enough stones and ready for some art? The convento da Madre de Deus might not look impressive from the outside, but here you will find some of the finest Portuguese art. Since this little church also hosts the tiles museum, there is fine Collection of Dutch azulejos.

More tiles, a gorgeous dome and splendid views of the city you can get from the São Vicente de Fora. This two-towered white church overlooks Alfama, and when the weather is clear you can see as far as the Tejo valley. Don’t miss out on the unique ivory statue of Jesus (Brought from Goa, India in the 18th century).
Want to trace back the footsteps of the great explorer Vasco Da Gama? Why not honour him with a visit to Lisbon, burn a candle in one of the many beautiful churches in Lisbon. Rent the best apartments in Lisbon, for a cheap and confortable stay.

Fado: the sad, melancolic song
icon1 lisbonblogger | icon2 Lisbon | icon4 09 30th, 2009| icon3No Comments »

Fado is more alive than ever. A new generation of artists joins to the mythic voices of its early times. Fado music is the heart of the Portuguese soul. The essential element of fado music is “saudade,” a Portuguese word that means longing. It is a sad music that sings to the destiny, to the death, to the betrayal love, to the despair and to the melancholy.

Mariza Fado

The origin of this popular music goes back to the 19th century and arises among the low classes and marginal neighbourhoods. Fado was the earthy music of taverns and brothels and street corners in Alfama and Mouraria, the old poor sections of Lisbon. Later, these songs proceeding from the suburbs, became fashionable among the aristocratic class, which introduced its verses in their lives as an eccentricity of ordinary people. Like other forms of folk music such as Argentine tango, American blues or Spanish flamenco, fado cannot be explained; it must be felt and experienced. Fado can be performed by men or women. A `fadista´ or fado singer communicates through gesture and facial expressions. The hands move, the body is stationary.

This music reached its golden times in the first half of the 20th century, when the Portuguese dictatorship of Salazar forced the fado performers to become professional and confined them to sing in the fado houses. Nowadays, it is protected by official institutions and cultivated as tourist spectacle.

The unrivalled queen of the fado was Amalia Rodrigues, worshipped at home and celebrated abroad as the most famous representative of Portuguese culture. Other great names of fado music were Carlos Ramos, Alfredo Marceneiro, Berta Cardoso, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Hermínia Silva, Fernando Farinha, Fernando Maurício, Lucília do Carmo or Manuel de Almeida.
Nowadays, Cristina Branco and Mariza walk the fine line between carrying on the tradition and trying to bring in a new audience.
If you travel to Lisbon, don´t forget to go to a fado spectacle. There are some restaurants where you can have dinner listening to beautiful fados. The best fado houses are located in the quarters of Alfama, Mouraria, Bairro Alto and Madragoa. Find the best apartments in Lisbon and enjoy the best accommodation way.
